1900's Early Modern
Artist: Joost Schmidt
Title: Bauhaus weimer typography
Date: 1923
Function: Poster,
Location: http://shenku-shenku.blogspot.com/2010/06/early-modern-1910-1935.html
This a poster from the early modern period in use of San-serif fonts, clean cut lines, solid colors, angles and white space. Note the use of red and black and the geometric shapes used. The diagonal layout of the design immediately brought my attention towards it, i find myself tilting my head when looking at it.
Artist: Lucian Bernhard
Title: Priester Matches
Date: 1906
Function: Advertisement
Location: http://imprint.printmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/lucian-bernhard-priester-matches.jpg
Lucian Bernhard has made this advertisement stand out by reducing objects to the simplest form yet making it so we still know what it is. The font is playful and edgy and is similar to the matches in the poster because it is simplified. i like this design because it is simple, but it works.

Arts and crafts movement
Artist: William Morris
Title: "Tulip and Willow"
Date: 1873
Function: Print Design
Picture Location: http://www.artyfactory.com/art_appreciation/graphic_designers/william_morris/william_morris.html
The detail and contrast of the colours immediately brought my attention to this piece. The style of this design is obviously quite floral and shows a lot of detail. I really like how this piece is shown as unfinished, which draws your attention from the colour to the lines, it makes me feel like getting a pencil and finishing it off for him. William Morris is clearly an established illustrator and the quality of the image is definitely very high. you can see this by looking at the smooth flowing pencil lines and the beautiful water colours used.

This particular design by william morris is one of the leading book designs of his time because of the use of the popular floral design and medieval typography. The border is very elegant and is quite like the Victorian style. This piece attracted me because of the detailed print of the horseman and the floral boarder.

1880's Art Noveau movement
Artist: Gian Amelio Malerba
Title: Mele
Date: 1906
Function: Poster
Picture location: http://www.thehistoryblog.com/archives/date/2010/03
This is a typical Art Noveau piece, the ladies in the picture are wearing pastel colored, loose fitting dresses and large hats. It seems as though the dog in the poster is a pet because of the red collar, in those days a pet would of been an accessory rather than a friend. The open neck of the the ladys dresses are quite rebellious which is typical of art noveau. I was attracted to this piece by the colour scheme, the light pastel colours work really well against the greens and browns.
Artist: Vincent Van Gogh
Title: Starry Night
Date: June 1889
Function: Painting
Picture Location: http://johnbriner.wordpress.com/2010/01/05/starry-night-by-vincent-van-gogh/
This painting was one of the most influential creations that inspired the Art Noveau Movement. The swirling forms display freedom and individualism, thinking outside the box and being different is art in itself. This Painting shows this. The thing that is most stunning is that this painting was created from a memory and not from viewing a landscape and painting from the surroundings. The flowing forms attracted me to this piece becuse it is a different way of creating clouds and other free flowing forms.

1840's Victorian Graphic styles
Artist: Unknown
Date: 1840's
Function: Advertisment
Picture Location: http://www.sheaff-ephemera.com/list/gaslight_album/reeves_pocket_companion.html
I find Victorian Graphic Design to be Quite over the top, what with decorative boarders, ribbons, banners, bold text and countless different fonts. The typeface is very elaborate and confronting, allthough this is coming from a teenager in the 21st century, so things have changed a fair bit. In those days, Design (in the way they must have seen it) was clever and artistic, they genuinely valued the boldness of it. 171 years later we are still making bold statments, but with a little more finnesse and creativity. Overall the quality of the design is very high for its time.

Again with the victorian graphic styles we see the ribbons, banners and boarders over populating the area of design. Allthough the text doesnt seem to differentiate between sizes and fonts which would of made this advertisment (in the those days) stand out from all the boldness. I think that the use of line for the border helps bring balance into the design. The overall quality for this design is high because of the illustrations being so detailed. The thing that brought my attention to this piece was (surprisingly) the dull colouring.
